Buddy

Buddy is a six-year-old cross, most likely German Shepherd × Belgian Malinois. He currently weighs 36 kg.

He came to the shelter after his owner could no longer look after him. There was some inappropriate behaviour from Buddy in his previous home, but we haven't seen any of it here — his previous life and circumstances most likely played a big part.

As his 'breed' suggests, he's a devoted and very active dog who wants (and loves) to work with people. He demands attention by barking, gets excited about anything within seconds, then joyfully snaps at the lead and drools with enthusiasm. He's food-driven, so working for rewards motivates him greatly. He knows 'sit', 'down' and 'paw', and when he's focused he can even walk to heel. He tends to drag people along on the lead, but he's open to persuasion. He's clean in his kennel and doesn't destroy anything.

He's friendly, affectionate and cuddly with people, and actively seeks out human company. When he wants to go out, he picks the lead up in his mouth :)

We recommend him for a home with older children — he's not aggressive towards kids, but given his snapping and how quickly he gets excited, a conflict could happen. He'll most likely chase cats and other animals — a new owner would need to work on this a lot. He doesn't pay much attention to other dogs, but if something kicks off, he'll certainly make himself heard.

He'll suit active people who want an active, cooperative partner. He's not the kind of dog you park in the garden and forget about. He won't suit a chaotic person — or anyone overly fond of alcohol.
